a solo exhibition by Hou Lam Tsui, employs medical terminology to describe the condition where eyelashes grow inward, deviating from their natural trajectory, thereby dissecting the beauty of failure. Such aesthetics of failure lies in a refusal to acquiesce to the dominant logics of power and discipline. This “wrong way” growth is reimagined here as a radical force, one that challenges norms, orders, and systemic power from feminist and queer perspectives. In Glitch Feminism, Legacy Russell reclaims the “glitch” not as a malfunction, but as a subversive and powerful rupture. Similarly, as Jack Halberstam explores in The Queer Art of Failure, there is something profoundly queer about failure, “failing is what queer have always done exceptionally well.” Departing from her continuous critical exploration of gender politics, feminine affects, and the media narratives, Hou Lam Tsui continues her exploration of the feminine experience through bodily states—as seen in earlier works employing pathologies like “geographic tongue” (Hard Tongue on Pillow, 2021) and “hangnail” (Hangnail, 2024). Heroines in fictional works are often punished with a tragic ending, frequently resulting in death. Deconstructing these narratives, the artist transforms them by offering a queer reading in the video essay that reimagines a possible ending beyond a Madonna-martyr sacrifice. This film also follows girls who fantasise—from yume joshi (dreaming girls) imagining interactions and even romance with fictional characters and idols, to fujoshi (rotten girls) who immerse themselves in boys’ love (BL) content—investigating how women use fantasy to escape a patriarchal and heteronormative reality. The female fantasy seeks to loosen the constraints of normalcy and social values through a feminine community that deviates from the canon. Such fantasy can be cruel: (female) readers have been accused of reading the “wrong book,” and fanfiction writers have been arrested for publishing works depicting homosexual romantic relationships. In this two-part installation, the single-channel video Dear Breeze follows a narrative structure, centering on a young woman in the summer heat, trapped between a sense of idleness and the desire to depart. She is unable to leave, yet wishes she could go, suspended in a journey that never truly begins. Composed through Super 8 film, digital video, and photographic collage, the work reconstructs the visual language of airline and tourist advertisements. Blurring the line between documentary and fiction, memory and projection, the film examines how femininity and consumer desire are constructed and sustained. These aesthetic codes, she suggests, are not neutral; they operate within a system of cosmopolitan capitalism that commodifies longing itself. Dear Breeze: Passing extends this inquiry into a spatial constellation of three-channel video and large-scale printed images, situated within the passageways of airports, stations, or shopping arcades. Advertising surfaces are saturated with projections of freedom, happiness, and romance, while the female body is repeatedly cast as a symbol of departure, a product of leisure, a vessel of desire. The spatial displacement turns these familiar images into how our perceptions, identities, and desires are formatted and internalized by these visual scripts. Rather than narrating flight directly, the work turns toward the affective infrastructure of travel itself: how we are guided, moved, and shaped by visual codes. Departing from their experience of wandering through a Sham Shui Po shopping mall filled with old CCD cameras and DV camcorders, the artists revisit their personal sticky memories through outdated, malfunctioning, and low-pixel electronic devices. They attempt to piece together fragments of the past, present, and future while tracing the idea of death amid the virtual, digital dimension, rethinking the impossibility of nostalgia. This performance was conducted in both Cantonese and English editions. A hangnail—a jagged piece of skin around the side of a fingernail—can be negligible or perplexing and even throbbing when one rips it off. The pain of pulling a hangnail may seem rather insignificant, but the unsettling, haunting annoyance of a hangnail that never truly goes away troubles people. The direct translation of hangnail into Chinese would be “inverse pulling”. This (mis)translation can perhaps offer a window to imagine the idea of “inverse pulling” as a radical force going against the norm, the order, and the system of power from feminist and queer perspectives.&nbsp;This year’s M.F.A. Graduation Exhibition, titled Hangnail, presents Hou Lam Tsui’s new works that encompass sculpture, installation, and moving-image. Tsui is interested in the often rigid media representation of the feminine, and how consumer desires shape affects, the way we perceive love and even identities.&nbsp;This exhibition is shaped to be an incredibly intimate, anachronistic space filled with small sculptures and a moving image piece that appears both familiar and strange to the audience. Central to numerous sculptural works in the exhibition is the use of soap, alongside found magical girl toys, vintage household objects, artificial hair, and ornaments perceived stereotypically feminine. Soap has been a recurring material in Tsui’s practice—she is fascinated by its precarity, fragility as well as everyday banality. Soap symbolises society’s obsessive pursuit of cleanliness and the association of cleanliness, and even purity, with women. Tsui’s sculptures delve into the concept of the “monstrous feminine” and shed light on the idea of abject by juxtaposing misshapen soap and out-of-place hair as seen in her ongoing series you dress me up. Another work Crybaby features teardrops in cast soap which the artist rethinks the radicalness of tears and the imagery portraying the sad girl in media that often ends up fetishising and deprecating feminine sorrow.&nbsp; Premiered at this graduation exhibition, is the latest moving-image work Hangnail which spans film photographs, scanned images of pages and book covers, 3D animation, and 2D animation. The work critically explores the fetishisation and romanticisation of feminine death, delving deep into the complex legacy of fictional heroines across various art forms and within the digital realm. It exposes the pervasive occurrence of the deaths of young girls and rethinks the unrealistic portrayals perpetuated by late male literary and artistic figures.
