Girl’s Shit: Trichiasis, which spans archival materials, 35mm photographs, Super 8 footage, and 3D animation to revisit the narrative structures of multiple classic works. Heroines in fictional works are often punished with a tragic ending, frequently resulting in death. Deconstructing these narratives, the artist transforms them by offering a queer reading in the video essay that reimagines a possible ending beyond a Madonna-martyr sacrifice.
This film also follows girls who fantasise—from yume joshi (dreaming girls) imagining interactions and even romance with fictional characters and idols, to fujoshi (rotten girls) who immerse themselves in boys’ love (BL) content—investigating how women use fantasy to escape a patriarchal and heteronormative reality. The female fantasy seeks to loosen the constraints of normalcy and social values through a feminine community that deviates from the canon. Such fantasy can be cruel: (female) readers have been accused of reading the “wrong book,” and fanfiction writers have been arrested for publishing works depicting homosexual romantic relationships. Nonetheless, through the bonding of sisterhood and queer reading, fantasy helps to redefine female identity, escape societal norms, and transform failure into resilience. Through narratives of desire, love, hope, and resistance, this film reinterprets so-called “failure” as an empowering refusal of imposed order.
